Trump sanctions threats mean nothing
The changeable president of the United States continues to issue empty threats against Moscow.
In his latest so-called threat against Russia, Trump said he will place further sanctions on Putin, when members of NATO stop buying oil from the country.
This is a subtle change on previous statements from the Oval Office, which have previously demanded that EU countries stop buying oil. Those countries have either stopped or are still cutting back supplies.
Trump’s change in rhetoric, when you examine the statement, says NATO, rather than the EU.
NATO countries include Turkey, which sits in both Europe and Asia and is heavily reliant of oils from Russia. The country is not a member of the EU.
Turkey simply can’t turn off the pipelines from its northern neighbour, as it lacks supplies from elsewhere.
What this means, is that Trump’s latest demand to stop NATO countries purchasing Russia oil, is not going to happen.
The effect of that “non-compliance” means that Trump can turn around and say that the US won’t apply additional sanctions, because “NATO won’t stop buying oil from Russia” and has disobeyed his demands. He will “reluctantly” place no further sanctions, and the fault will be NATO and not his.
What this means that Trump doesn’t have to confront Putin with sanctions, letting the Russian leader off the hook. Again.
